Sunshine On Swanson Branding

Sunrise_on_Swanson_Branding.jpg
I attended the Swanson Branding in Ft. Collins CO a few years back, They prefer to rope all thier cattle in a traditional manner. It was nice to see a branding where every one is concentrating on handling their horses and stock well.

The Feel Of A Good Horse

PICT0089.JPG

The intent of this sculpture was to capture the look and feel of a good ranch horse. To be a fine horseman can be quite the life's quest.

This is a work in progress, titled Herd Bull. We have about 2,000 buffalo at the Zapata Ranch. The large herd bulls in thier prime can weigh around 1700 lbs to a ton. They are impressive to watch as they roam about the ranch.

David and Goliath
roping_sculpt.jpg
PICT0075.JPGI am a fan of the Baroque artsist Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini (December 7, 1598 – November 28, 1680), no relation. His sculpture of the biblical figure David has long been one of my favorite sculptures, and inspired me to create this piece. I enjoy the rest of his work and it contiues to inspire the rest of my work.

Heart Mountain Doctors
wyo_herd.jpg
I worked a season for the Flitner Ranch in Shell Wyoming. They Leased some ground below Heart Mountain near Cody Wy. That country was green as a goard as the cow boss Bill Schwartz would say. I was working with another fellow that day and as we roped the HUGE calf in the picture, it took off full steam and zipped the rope through the other fellows hand. It was a bit rough from there but we got him doctored.
